We would like to bring to your attention a case that we have dealt with recently so you can understand the importance of updating your details.
We had a client come to us with a letter from the ATO in regards to Medicare Levy Surcharge that she was required to pay. Both the client and her husband had comprehensive private health insurance however they gave birth to their first child and informed the health fund approximately a month after the baby was born.
As the clients child was not covered since birth, both the husband and wife were liable for the Medicare Levy Surcharge for the time the baby was not covered.
The ATO have been very proactive lately and we are coming across a lot of situations similar to the one above. We wouldn’t like to see you liable for penalties for an innocent mistake as I am sure you wouldn’t like to be in that situation. Do not forget to update your details when they change with all interested parties to avoid a situation like the one above.
Regards,
The Team At Sylvia Troccoli
